Tuned Pale Ale thanks to @uncrate

Tuned Pale Ale

Tuned Pale Ale

It's little secret that most people enjoy music when they're drinking, but what about making music with their drinks? Tuned Pale Ale ($TBA) is an ingenious microbrew that features a vertical note scale on the edge of the label — just drink down to your desired note, and blow on the top. In addition to having up to six "blow" notes, the backs of the bottles sport ridges for Latin-style percussion, and the box flips upside-down to reveal a tongue drum that produces six different tones, one for each of the bottle slots. It's like Rock Band, only a lot cheaper, and with a much higher alcohol content.

PGATOUR.COM - Pro-am rule that led to Furyk DQ now suspended for rest of 2010

Aug. 31, 2010

PGA TOUR commissioner Tim Finchem Tuesday announced the suspension of the regulation that resulted in Jim Furyk's disqualification last week from The Barclays for being late to his pro-am starting time. This part of the regulation will be suspended for the duration of the 2010 season.

Hereafter, should a player be late for his pro-am starting time, the situation will be handled as a matter of unbecoming conduct. Such player will be required to participate in the remainder of the pro-am round and may be required to perform additional sponsor activity. A player who misses his pro-am obligation in its entirety will still be ruled ineligible for the tournament unless he has been excused in accordance with the provisions of the regulations.

The commissioner has asked the Player Advisory Council and Player Directors to evaluate the current pro-am regulations to determine whether alternative measures can effectively ensure that players honor their pro-am obligations without placing them at risk of disqualification. The matter will be discussed at the Policy Board meeting in November.

Landline phones growing obsolete Google Voice installing phone booths

By MICHAEL LIEDTKE

The Associated Press

Published: August 30, 2010

SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc. is adding a free e-mail feature that may persuade more people to cut the cords on their landline phones.

Unveiled Wednesday, the service enables U.S. users of Google's Gmail service to make calls from microphone-equipped computers to telephones virtually anywhere in the world.

All calls in the United States and Canada will be free through at least the end of the year. That undercuts the most popular PC-to-phone service, Skype, which charges 1.2 to 2.1 cents a minute for U.S. calls.

It also threatens to overshadow another free PC-to-phone calling service called MagicTalk that was just introduced by VocalTec Communications Ltd.

Skype, Google and many other services have been offering free computer-to-computer calling for years.

Google hopes to make money on its PC-to-phone service by charging 2 cents or more a minute for international calls.

The international rates will vary widely, sometimes even within the same country.

People also will be able to receive calls on their PCs if they obtain a free phone number from Google or already have one.

The phone numbers and technology for the new PC-calling service are being provided by Google Voice, a telecommunications hub the company has been trying to expand. It was an invitation-only service until two months ago when Google Voice began accepting all number requests.

Google disclosed last year that it had assigned about 1.4 million phone numbers through its Voice service, which can field calls made to a person's home, mobile or office number. Craig Walker, a Google product manager who helped develop Voice, said the service has expanded its reach since then.

Google plans to promote the service by setting up red phone booths at universities and airports across the United States. People will be able to make free calls from the booths to U.S. and Canadian numbers and save on international calls.

To widen the service's appeal, Google plans to enable people to transfer, or "port," their existing home or mobile phones to Voice.

The added competition comes at an inopportune time for Skype S.A., the Luxembourg-based company that recently filed plans for an initial public offering of stock.

Skype has 560 million registered users, including 8.1 million paying customers (most people use the free PC-to-PC service). After four years under the ownership of eBay Inc., Skype was sold to a group of private investors in November for about $2 billion.

The company has been doing well since the sale, earning $13 million on revenue of $406 million during the first half of this year.

I have used MagicJack for over a year. Will forward calls to wherever i request, unanswered calls go to voicemessage that is forwarded to my email account. Not bad and for cheap.

International calls coming in and going out are easy too.

Landlines would disappear for good if only they could find a way to replicate the dropped calls and awful audio quality of a typical cellular phone. Or maybe cell phones could improve from their third-world audio quality and performance. Nah...

Shopping List: Nutella Snack & Drink

nutella

Imagine if Kraft hired a group of Italian taste-makers and product designers to create a concept for an overhaul of its disturbing lunchables line, and there you have Nutella Snack & Drink.

Made by Ferrero, which produces Nutella, the chocolate and hazelnut confection, the cylinder-shaped Nutella Snack & Drink is divided into compartments containing a serving of Nutella, bread-sticks to scoop it out, and a splash of iced tea to wash everything down.

This product was a staple at all of the roadside Autogrills when we visited Italy two years ago. Now, you can find it stateside at Buon Italia at Chelsea Market.

For more information (in Italian only), visit the official Nutella Web site and click on "Nutella Snack and Drink," which features a very compelling commercial (download zip). While you're there, be sure to check out mynutella, the Nutella online community, where you can pledge your love for the spread and view the latest photos from Nutella "Live at the Beach."

Nutella Snack & Drink is $3.25 at Buon Italia, Chelsea Market, 75 9th Avenue, New York, NY 10011 (212.633.9090).
