THE TRAVELING TERABYTE PROJECT
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The traveling terabyte is a project of the hacker community that began in the summer of 2006. Initially conceived as an attempt to bring informational content to friends and associates who couldn't attend DefCon 14 due to their being deployed in uniform or assigned to government contracting details overseas, the project has grown substantially and now touches the lives of numerous servicemen and women, bringing some of the comforts of home to those who find themselves in foreign lands without reliable links to their friends and families.
From a technical standpoint, the project consists of outfitting very large hard drives with highly-compatible enclosures capable of operating in a wide range of environments and connecting to nearly any existing personal computer. These drives are then secured in tactical, damage-resistant packaging, filled with educational and entertaining content, and circulated amid a large circle of friends and associates.
The original concept and design of the first traveling terabyte was the work of Deviant Ollam, however shortly after his first mention of this idea on the DefCon Forums, many other prominent members of the hacker community volunteered their own time, effort, skills, and resources to bring the project to fruition. Certain individuals whose contributions were particularly noteworthy were DaKahuna, Thorn, AST, theprez, and renderman.
More details concerning this project, from its participants to its technical specifications, can be found under the Frequently Asked Questions section of the web site.
